Despite COVID-19, Greeley’s Young Chautauquans will get their time to shine. Here’s how to watch.

By Kelly Ragan

Attention history lovers, not even COVID-19 could ruin this time-honored tradition – thanks to the power of technology, Young Chautauquans will be able to perform via Zoom Thursday.

Originally scheduled for April 30, the live Young Chautauqua performances at Centennial Village Museum were canceled.

Young Chautauqua is a nationally recognized program that gives scholarly youths a chance to portray a smattering of historical figures.

According to a city of Greeley news release, several Young Chautauquans will perform Thursday, including Kathryn Broderius portraying American social activist Harriet William Russell and Aven McCall, portraying Nadia Popova, a female Russian bomber pilot.

To virtually attend the event, email Elizabeth Kellums at betsy.kellums@greeleygov.com to RSVP and get the Zoom link.

The virtual event will be put on by the Greeley Historic Preservation Commission as part of its will free 2020 History Brown Bag series.

While it’s possible the schedule will change (you know, depending on how this global pandemic treats us), the Greeley Historic Preservation Commission has several History Brown Bag presentations lined up. Here’s the schedule:

  • July 23: Young Chautauquans perform

  • Aug. 27: Voices from the Archives by Marian Ruge

  • Sept. 24: Greeley Masonic Temple Rehabilitation by Ron and Linde Thompson

  • Oct. 22: Death in the Balcony: A Sterling Example or Chief of Concern? By Susan Seager
