Downtown Greeley kicks off Friday Fest with Cinco de Mayo celebration

By Dan England

Downtown Greeley’s version of TGIF begins Friday with a celebration of Cinco de Mayo.

Friday Fest celebrates its 10th anniversary by hosting the Colorado Allstars and Poquito Maz. The event brings free performances from bands while hosting Go-Cup on the 9th Street Plaza, where you can carry — and drink — a cup of alcohol sold by several different businesses who operate in the area. Greeley was the first city to establish the special district in 2012. As a result, Friday Fests tend to be some of the most popular events in Greeley, with thousands every week coming out to dance, drink and enjoy the music, as long as the weather cooperates

Downtown celebrates Friday Fest’s 10th anniversary in its 11th year of hosting them, given that 2020 was “the year that never happened,” said Alison Hamling, chair of the downtown Greeley promotional association who books the bands and runs the show.

In addition to the usual fire spinners, face painters and balloon artists, some new entertainment elements are planned this year for select nights, including a large bubble wand artist, magic demonstrations, LED-light hula-hoop artists and stilt walkers from Spectra Circus.
