Greeley Ice Haus to host American Girl Doll Skate, featuring Corinne Tan, the first Chinese American ‘Girl of the Year’

By Kelly Ragan

The Greeley Ice Haus is set to host its annual American Girl Doll Skate April 16.

This year the theme centers around 2022 American Girl Doll of the Year, Corinne Tan.

According to a news release, Corinne is a Chinese American student from Aspen, Colorado. She struggles with some real-life challenges (well, as real as they can be for a doll) as she embraces changes in her family with a new stepdad, faces racism at school, and learns how to share her feelings instead of bottling them up.

Corinne is the first “Girl of the Year” doll of Chinese descent, according to a report by CNN. American Girl announced as part of Corinne’s launch it would partner with AAPI Youth Rising, a nonprofit made up of young people raising awareness about xenophobia against Asian Americans. The move came in the wake of rising hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders amid the pandemic.

It’s not all heavy though – Corinne is also a fun-loving skier who adopts a shelter dog and works to train the pup for search-and-rescue missions.

“We are thrilled to be able to grant one child the 2022 American Girl Doll of the Year, Corinne Tan at the event this year as our grand prize,” said Ice Haus Coordinator Carla Villavicencio in the news release. “This doll exemplifies the true idea of giving back to your community by adopting a shelter pet and training a rescue dog. We love the local connection of Corinne Tan, a doll from Colorado, whose younger sister is an ice skater. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate our community’s diversity and compassion for those animals in need of a good home.”
