Greeley’s annual Potato Day takes place September 9

 By Kelly Ragan

If you love potatoes, mark your calendar for Greeley’s annual Potato Day Sept. 9. Not only will you have the chance to enjoy a tasty baked potato with all the good fixings, you’ll also have the chance to support Greeley Museums at one of the largest fundraising events of the year.

Proceeds support the museums’ preservation and education programs, according to the city.

Potatoes are one of the main event attractions, but you can also expect to see living history demonstrations, a reenactment performance by the Buffalo Soldiers and other live entertainment.

Why potatoes? They’re part of Greeley history. The first Potato Day took place at Lincoln Park 129 years ago, according to the city, where 6,000 people came out to celebrate the humble tuber. On Sept. 26, 1987, Friends of the Greeley Museums held the first Potato Day fundraising event.
