If you haven’t heard of Hamilton – the smash hit musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda that took the world by storm – this is your chance to come out of the rock you’ve been living under. Just make sure to do it in time to catch the performance of “Spamilton: An American Parody” at the Union Colony Civic Center May 13.

Created by Gerard Alessandrini, the comic mastermind behind the long-running hit "Forbidden Broadway," and performed by a versatile cast of eight, Spamilton is a side-splitting new musical parody, according to the UCCC website. It’s a crash course of everyone’s favorite Broadway blockbusters, including celebrity satires and pop culture zings accompanied by hip-hop on the piano.

On the show’s Facebook page, Alessandrini explained why he just had to write Spamilton.

“Like most of the country, I became obsessed with Hamilton and the revolutionary score by Lin-Manuel Miranda,” Alessandrini said. “I believe his stunning reinvention on how to musicalize a dramatic story completely revived the Broadway Musical from being a dead art form. After satirizing musicals for 30 years, I couldn’t help but feel obligated to take a few jabs at the biggest hit musical that has opened in New York in my lifetime.”

He began by writing a parody or two for fun, he said, but he found himself rewriting Hamilton while adding other pieces of classic and contemporary musicals.

“What came out is a wild mash-up of the ‘fabulous invalid’ called Broadway and the hip-hop hype of Hamilton,” he said. “The show is fabulous, the hype is unprecedented. Hamilton spam is everywhere. Voila! Spamilton!”
