Weld Clerk and Recorder Carly Koppes announces bid for third term

By Trevor Reid for the Greeley Tribune

Weld County Clerk and Recorder Carly Koppes announced Wednesday her run for a third term in the office.

In a news release, Koppes said she will continue to bring innovations to the office and work to improve the staffs’ ability to serve county residents. As part of her goal to make Weld the best office in the state, she hopes to continue making services available outside normal office hours.

Koppes was first elected in 2014 and reelected in 2018, when she received nearly 61.9% of the vote over challenger Susie Velasquez’s 38.1%. Secretary of State records indicate Koppes filed in February, just days behind Matthew Law of Ault. Both are Republicans.

Koppes highlighted her experience and recent upgrades at the Clerk and Recorder’s Office implemented under her leadership. Among the innovations Koppes cited were self-service kiosks to renew license plates, a program the county piloted and now offers permanently. Weld is the leading county in the state for usage of the kiosks, according to the release.

Koppes also advocated for the online renewal of diesel vehicles, which began in 2017. Online options have increased to 26 different transactions, and Koppes is working with the Department of Revenue to continue adding options. Such innovations save time and taxpayer money, according to the release.

Koppes also implemented a new queuing system to expedite line management in 2016, an offering that has expanded since its introduction.

Koppes has been appointed to the Local Leadership Council of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, a federal advisory board giving the commission expert insights about local election administration. Koppes plans to continue her work to improve the security and integrity of elections, according to the release. Koppes’ other accolades include serving as the 2021 Colorado County Clerks Association president.

Born and raised in Greeley, Koppes is the oldest of three children to parents Joseph and Connie Koppes. She enjoys spending time with her horses, target shooting, gardening and camping.

“The three divisions, Elections, Motor Vehicle and Recording, have responsibilities, and complexity that require a leader who truly understands the day-to-day operations as well as the impacts of proposed state and federal legislation,” Koppes said. “I am that leader and that is why I am asking to continue to serve you as your Weld County Clerk and Recorder.”
