Greeley City Council approves $65K settlement with former employee alleging discrimination

By Kelly Ragan

Greeley City Council voted to approve a $65,000 settlement with a former employee who filed charges alleging disability discrimination and violations of the Family Medical Leave Act.

The former employee, Christina Wiles, worked full time for the city as a marketing coordinator. According to her LinkedIn profile, she began working for the city in 2017. In that time, she did marketing for the City of Greeley Museums, bringing attention to exhibits such as “The Dakan Perspective: Over a Century of Father & Son Photography” and “Skål! Scandinavian Spirits.”

She left the role June 11, 2020, according to city documents.

The city denied it violated any of its policies or procedures in the settlement. Wiles also agreed not to make statements or take action to disparage the city in the settlement.

City council did not discuss the agreement with Wiles during the meeting, instead voting to approve the settlement as part of the consent agenda Nov. 15.

The announcement of the settlement follows a separate $262,500 settlement council approved in September with former employee Rebecca Ries-Walter. She also filed a complaint alleging discrimination.

Ries-Walter also worked in communications for the city as the Greeley Police Department’s public information officer and social media coordinator before Kent Keller took over the role in 2019 when Ries-Walter returned to being a patrol officer.

Ries-Walter left the department December 2021.
