Greeley City Council representative Tommy Butler announces re-election campaign

By Kelly Ragan

Greeley city councilmember Tommy Butler announced he will seek re-election come November.

Butler, who ran for his first term four years ago, currently serves Ward I, which stretches from downtown to northeast Greeley.

In a Facebook post announcing his decision, Butler said he believes in Greeley’s bright future and sees a need for forward-thinking leadership.

In an interview, Butler highlighted the progress city council has made on affordable housing over the last several years. Part of those efforts included approving zoning changes that will equate to about 920 units of affordable housing to Greeley with projects such as the Habitat for Humanity Hope Springs project.

Other aspects of those efforts include approving funding to bring on Juliana Kitten, an assistant city manager tasked with leading the city’s homelessness and housing initiatives.

“I think that will be one of the biggest things over the next 30 years,” Butler said.

Butler also highlighted progress council made on getting a drop-off glass recycling program off the ground. The private-public partnership between Owens-Illinois, Crabtree Brewing Co., and Andersen Sales and Salvage Inc. kicked off in March 2022. According to Butler, the program has recycled more than 21 tons of glass in 2022 alone.

Perhaps what Butler is most proud of, though, is the progress council has made in securing funding to fix some of the city’s worst sidewalks – especially on the stretch of 5th Street between 14th and 23rd Avenues. When he first started campaigning four years ago, that stretch of sidewalk was among his constituents’ top complaints.

“But that isn’t the only bad sidewalk we have in the community,” Butler said. “We need to keep making sure that investment in infrastructure is equitable – making sure northeast Greeley gets its fair share.”

Butler has secured endorsements from the likes of Colorado State Treasurer Dave Young, House District 50 Representative Mary Young, Greeley city councilmember Deb DeBoutez and Greeley-Evans School District 6 board member Terri Pappas.
