Greeley mayor John Gates announces re-election campaign
By Kelly Ragan
Mayor John Gates announced Monday he would seek re-election for his fourth and final term.
Gates has served as Greeley’s mayor since 2017 after having served on Greeley City Council as Mayor Pro-Tem from 2009-2017.
“I am very proud of our city council and the continued focus on making our community a great place to live, work and recreate,” Gates said in a news release.
Gates won his last re-election campaign by more than 70% in 2021 against John Gauthiere and Jim Ethridge.
In 2021, water took the center stage as the city worked to add the Terry Ranch project, an underground aquifer storage project, to its portfolio. Gauthiere and a group he spearheaded, called Save Greeley’s Water, worked to get two amendments on the ballot in 2021 that would have changed how the city makes decisions about water.
This election season, affordable housing and growth are emerging as top issues.
Gates acknowledged the challenges Greeley faces now and in the future, including unprecedented growth and affordable housing.
Housing, particularly affordable housing, is one of his top priorities, he said, as well as bolstering commercial, residential and industrial growth. Gates emphasized a need to spur additional economic development while protecting water resources.
“The work is difficult but rewarding,” Gates said. “I am grateful to be your mayor and I will continue to work hard on behalf of all citizens.”
