New scholarship available to first generation students at University of Northern Colorado

Thanks to a new scholarship fund launched in 2022, the University of Northern Colorado will have some extra cash to give out.

UNC was recently named one of seven Colorado universities to receive funding through the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority’s Building the Future scholarship fund according to a news release.

The multi-phase, multi-year fund will provide up to 260 scholarships over the next 10 years. CHFA created the fund to strengthen Colorado’s future workforce, advance equity in education access and promote leadership in affordable housing and economic development, according to the release.

“Investing in students to help pave the way for them to achieve personal, professional, and financial goals is essential to Colorado’s future. A college education can break down barriers and open doors that lead to stability and prosperity—and everyone deserves these opportunities,” said Cris White, CHFA executive director and CEO in the release. “While CHFA has a history of supporting education, CHFA’s new Building the Future Scholarship Fund allows us to serve young Coloradans in a way we never have before.”

UNC received the scholarship funding as part of the Building the Future scholarship fund’s second phase and will award four $2,500 scholarships annually to Colorado residents who represent the first generation in their family to attend college and who identify as a member of an underrepresented community.

Preference will be given to sophomores and above with at least a 2.5 grade point average who are enrolled in UNC’s Kenneth W. Monfort College of Business, according to the release.
