Pay raises for municipal judge, city attorney get initial approval from Greeley City Council

Greeley City Council passed on first reading two ordinances to raise the salaries of Municipal Judge Mark Gonzales and City Attorney Doug Marek. The moves follow standard performance reviews for the city employees. The ordinances will be set for a public hearing and final reading on March 15.

Gonzales’ salary would increase 8%, or $13,133.52, to $177,302.52. Council gave him an overall performance rating of Regularly Exceeds Expectations. He received that rating for all eight categories of the review: job knowledge and skills, interpersonal relations, customer service, accountability, management and supervision, leadership, excellence, and courtroom management.

“He led the courts through the pandemic without disruption, ensuring a safe and functioning operation,” reads the summary of Gonzales’s evaluation. “The City of Greeley benefits greatly from his continued service as municipal judge.”

Marek’s salary would increase 5%, or $11,195.78, to $235,111.28. Council gave him an overall performance rating of Occasionally Exceeds Expectations. He received that rating on seven of the eight categories. He received a rating of Regularly Meets Expectations for the category of customer service.

“Mr. Marek is a respected leader at city and state levels and is a trusted legal partner to the City of Greeley and the City Council,” his performance summary reads.
